"Soldiers don’t talk. But when they’re out in nature, surrounded by others who understand, they do, and they start to heal."
Geoff Green, Founder
MISSION & HISTORY.
At Mindful Step, our mission is to support veterans and serving military personnel struggling with mental health challenges—such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression—by reconnecting them with nature, purpose, and each other. Through outdoor adventures, peer-led support, and inclusive experiences, we provide a safe, understanding space where healing begins with every step.
Mindful Step was founded by Geoff Green, a former soldier and lifelong outdoor enthusiast, after a powerful conversation with an old army friend.
Recognising the unique struggles many veterans face when transitioning to civilian life, Geoff saw the need for a different kind of support—one built on shared experience, trust, and the restorative power of nature.
With a background in hiking, mountaineering, and military service, Geoff set out to create a charity where veterans could find their footing again—physically, emotionally, and mentally.
What began as a simple idea has grown into a movement of connection, resilience, and hope. From climbing mountains to sitting around campfires, MindfulStep has helped countless veterans open up, find purpose, and take meaningful steps toward recovery.
THE SOLDIER.
Geoff Green is a decorated Army veteran whose career spans over two decades of service in some of the world’s most demanding and volatile environments.
His journey began in 1983, taking him through deployments in Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands, and the Gulf War. He served as part of NATO forces, conducted reconnaissance missions, and held leadership positions in specialised roles such as the Close Observation Platoon. His experiences highlight not only his operational expertise but also his unwavering commitment to his unit and regiment.
Throughout his military career, Geoff played a crucial role in major global conflicts. He was among the first in his regiment to cross the border during the Gulf War, serving on the frontlines with the renowned Desert Rats. His deployments in Kosovo and Northern Ireland immersed him in the complexities of peacekeeping and post-conflict operations, often in high-risk and emotionally charged environments.
From reconnaissance and combat training to facilitating sensitive exchanges in war zones, Geoff’s adaptability and calm under pressure defined his service.
THE VETERAN.
Beyond his impressive military record, Geoff faced an unseen battle of his own. The years of high-intensity operations left deep scars, and after leaving the Army, he struggled to adjust to civilian life. Like many veterans, he found himself wrestling with the psychological toll of service, battling complex PTSD and the loss of the structure and camaraderie that had defined his world.
Seeking purpose and healing, he turned to the outdoors - a passion he had carried with him since his youth. Mountaineering became his refuge, offering both physical and mental resilience in the face of his struggles. The mountains, with their challenges and solitude, mirrored the battles he had faced within himself. Realising how powerful nature could be in aiding recovery, Geoff felt compelled to help others who were suffering. This became the catalyst for founding Mindful Step, a charity dedicated to supporting veterans through outdoor activities, mindfulness, and shared experiences.
Through Mindful Step, Geoff uses his love of the mountains to create a sense of connection, purpose, and healing for those struggling with PTSD and the challenges of life after service. His journey - from soldier to survivor, and now mentor - serves as a testament to resilience, proving that even after the battlefield, there is still a path to recovery, belonging, and hope.
